The only Dole
that turns up.

Zero-turn mowers and tractors, working Mount Crosby and Brisbane's western corridor. Blocks of any size, however far gone.

An operator in an olive green uniform cutting a large grassed acreage block on a black zero-turn mower, with mown stripes behind him, a ute and trailer and a corrugated iron shed.

D.O.L.E. — Department Of Lawn Enforcement. Known locally as The Dole. No, you cannot claim it. No, it does not turn up fortnightly. It turns up when you ring.

Form DOLE-1

Notify the Department

Three details and we will come back with a figure, usually the same day. No obligation, and nobody will chase you.

Photos price a block faster than any form. Text a couple to 0478 910 970 and we can usually quote off those.

Schedule 1

Offences and remedies

Most of what we do is acreage. Long grass on a big block is not a cosmetic problem, it is a snake problem, a fire problem, and eventually a council problem.

1.1Unlawful accumulation on acreage

Grass has taken a paddock and is holding it. The Department attends with a tractor and slasher and settles the matter, however tall it has got.

Remedy · Slashing
1.2Prolonged neglect of a block

Vacant land, rentals between tenants, and blocks nobody has looked at since winter. No property has yet been declined.

Remedy · Full clean-up
1.3Fire hazard by omission

A letter has arrived from an actual council with actual powers. We remove the cause before they follow up.

Remedy · Hazard reduction
1.4Overgrowth, residential

Ordinary suburban lawns, kept in line on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly cycle. Smaller matters, handled the same way.

Remedy · Mowing
1.5Failure to maintain a boundary

Edges have blurred. Fencelines, driveways and easements have quietly merged into one another.

Remedy · Edging & trimming
1.6Hedge exceeding its brief

A hedge planted for privacy has developed ambitions. Shaped, thinned and returned to its original purpose.

Remedy · Hedge trimming
A badly overgrown block with waist-high dry grass and an abandoned mower.

Left a season too long. Still routine work.

Schedule 2

Areas within jurisdiction

Based at Mount Crosby, working the western corridor and out toward Ipswich. Acreage anywhere in the district.

Beyond these boundaries our authority is even less enforceable than it is within them. Call anyway. Arrangements can usually be made.

Part III

Office of the Commissioner

The Department runs zero-turn mowers and tractors. The zero-turns handle the open ground and get around trees, tanks and fencelines without leaving a strip behind. The tractors and slashers take the paddocks and anything that has got well away.

We are based at Mount Crosby, which is how the jurisdiction came to be drawn where it is. We quote the jobs ourselves, and we turn up on the day we said we would.

There is no head office and no call centre. You get the people who do the work.

Part IV

Determination of penalty

4.(1) The Department does not issue fines. It issues invoices, which are considerably harder to appeal.

4.(2) In determining the penalty, the officer shall have regard to—

  • (a) the size of the block, an acre and a courtyard being different days of work;
  • (b) the duration of the offence, ankle-high grass mowing straight where waist-high grass needs slashing;
  • (c) access and terrain, including gates, gradients, rocks, stumps and anything hiding in the grass;
  • (d) obstructions on site, such as tanks, sheds, dams, star pickets and dog runs;
  • (e) the disposal of evidence, mulched and left being cheapest and baled or removed costing more;
  • (f) the frequency of patrol, a standing arrangement costing less per visit than a one-off rescue.

4.(3) A figure is provided before any work begins. You are free to ignore it entirely.

Fastest way is to call

We answer when we can hear the phone over the slasher. If we can't, we call straight back.

Or lodge the details in Form DOLE-1 and we will come back to you.

Part V

Matters raised in correspondence

Am I in trouble?

No. The Department holds no statutory powers of any kind. It holds a slasher. The distinction is important and we are reminded of it often.

Why is it called The Dole?

Departmental abbreviation. D.O.L.E. Any resemblance to a fortnightly payment from another department entirely is coincidental and, frankly, unhelpful. You cannot claim it, you cannot be breached by it, and it will not ask you to look for work. It cuts grass.

Is this an actual government department?

It is not. We checked twice. It is a mowing and slashing business operated through Northward Group Pty Ltd, ABN 18 701 489 401. The uniform is olive green because it hides grass stains, not because we are affiliated with anybody.

How big a block can you do?

Acreage is the day job. Paddocks, house blocks, vacant land and easements are all routine. If a tractor and slasher can get onto it, it can be dealt with.

How bad is too bad?

No property has yet been declined. Blocks untouched for a season are ordinary work. Where a matter needs slashing rather than mowing you will be told before it starts, not after.

Must I be present?

No. Provided the officer can get onto the block and any gates are unlocked, attendance is not required. Tell us about dogs, gate codes, stumps or soft ground and we will work around it.

Are you insured?

Yes, and genuinely so. Public liability cover is held for every job. This is one of the few claims on this page that would survive scrutiny.

How are penalties paid?

Bank transfer on invoice, after the work is done. No deposit. The Department extends credit to all citizens, having no realistic means of enforcement.

Part VI · The register

Join the register

The Department writes a few times a year and no more: before fire season, when the spring growth starts, and when the rain has done something unreasonable. If your block needs doing, we will say so before it gets away from you.

Unsubscribe any time. We will not pass your details to anybody, including other departments.
